Sometimes, it all starts with a small sign. Discover how an audiometry test can help protect your hearing health.
If you find yourself asking others to repeat things, struggling to follow conversations in noisy places, or turning up the volume more than usual, it might be time for an audiometry test. At Centros Auditivos La Marina, we explain this test clearly and usefully, without technical jargon.
What is considered a normal audiometry result?
An audiometry result is considered normal when a person can detect sounds below 20 decibels (dB) across all tested frequencies, especially between 250 Hz and 8,000 Hz, which are key for understanding speech.
In simpler terms, if the test shows you can hear soft sounds across all frequencies, your hearing is likely within the expected range. If there are difficulties in certain areas, it may indicate mild, moderate or severe hearing loss.
That’s why regular hearing check-ups are so important, especially if you have a family history of hearing issues, regular exposure to noise, or trouble following conversations.
Types of audiometry: pure tone, speech and more
There are several types of audiometry tests, each designed to evaluate different aspects of hearing. In our centres in El Albir, Moraira and Jávea, we perform the following:
Pure tone audiometry
This is the most common test. It evaluates the ability to hear pure tones at different volumes and frequencies. It’s performed using headphones, and the patient indicates when they hear a sound.
The results are plotted on a graph called an audiogram, which shows how the ear responds to different tones.
This test helps identify conductive hearing loss (related to the outer or middle ear) or sensorineural hearing loss (linked to the inner ear or auditory nerve).
Speech audiometry
This test assesses the patient’s ability to understand spoken words. It doesn’t just measure whether they hear the sound, but also whether they understand it correctly.
This is crucial because many people with hearing loss can still hear sounds, but struggle to make sense of what’s being said. Speech audiometry is very helpful for adjusting hearing aids, as it allows amplification to be personalised based on how each person processes spoken language.
Other complementary tests
In addition to pure tone and speech audiometry, we also use techniques like tympanometry, which evaluates eardrum movement and middle ear condition, or real-ear measurements (REM), which ensure accurate hearing aid fitting. Every case is unique, which is why we combine different tests to achieve a complete and reliable diagnosis.
Reasons not to delay your next hearing check-up
Hearing loss often goes unnoticed because it develops gradually. It’s easy to adapt to changes without realising it, but over time, hearing loss can affect communication, social life, mood and even daily safety.
Getting an audiometry test is the first step in preventing hearing issues and taking action if needed. The sooner hearing loss is detected, the easier it is to manage and avoid greater consequences.
Fortunately, there are highly effective solutions that can help restore clear and natural hearing, improving your overall quality of life.
